About XML Sitemaps
An XML sitemap is a file that lists a website's essential pages, making sure Google and other search engines can find and crawl them all. It's highly recommended to submit your sitemap.xml to Google Search Console to improve your SEO visibility.
Are Priority and ChangeFreq required?
No. Google has explicitly stated that they mostly ignore the <priority> and <changefreq> tags. They rely on their own algorithms to determine how often to crawl a page. The <lastmod> tag, however, is very useful if it accurately reflects the last time the page was updated.
XML Sitemap Limits
A single XML sitemap can contain up to 50,000 URLs and must not exceed 50MB uncompressed. If you have more URLs, you must split them into multiple sitemaps and link them together using a Sitemap Index file.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is an XML sitemap used for?
An XML sitemap lists the URLs on your site you want search engines to know about, along with optional metadata like last-modified date and priority — it helps search engines discover pages, especially ones that aren't well-linked internally.
Do I need to submit my sitemap to Google manually?
Typically yes — you submit the sitemap URL through Google Search Console's Sitemaps section, though Google can also discover a sitemap automatically if it's referenced in your robots.txt file.
How many URLs can a single sitemap file contain?
The sitemap protocol allows up to 50,000 URLs or 50MB uncompressed per file — larger sites need a sitemap index file that references multiple individual sitemap files.
Does having a sitemap guarantee my pages get indexed?
No — a sitemap only helps search engines discover URLs faster; whether a page actually gets indexed still depends on content quality, crawl budget, and whether the page meets the search engine's indexing criteria.
